Hospital for Special Surgery

Located at 72nd Street and above the FDR Drive, the Hospital for Special Surgery project posed significant structural and logistical challenges. The original building was constructed on a structural steel truss and concrete plank platform, and was prefabricated in four sections, each weighing 800 tons. These sections are carried by a series of eight, one-story steel trusses. A significant portion of the core building materials were brought to the site by barges and then rigged over the highway. In addition, this six-story leading edge hospital facility was completed while the original adjacent hospital building remained fully operational.
